How does a salt water chlorine generator work?

As slightly salted pool water passes through the chlorine generator cell, electrolysis (which converts liquid into a gas) produces chlorine in the water.

How much salt is needed in the pool water?

Acceptable range for most salt water systems is 3400 - 4000 ppm.

Will the pool water taste salty?

No,the salt level is at the taste threshold. The concentration of salt in the pool water is approximately 1/10 th of the level in ocean water and is below the level of taste for most people. This level of salt is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of salt in a gallon of water.

What kind of salt is needed?

Water softner salt is generally used, though you can also use ordinary food grade salt. The salt should be 99.5% pure. Never use rock salt (ice melt) or salts that have more than 1% of "anti-cracking agents" and YPS (Yellow Prussate of Soda) which may cause staining in pools.

How often do I have to add salt?

Once or twice a year depending how much fresh water or rainfall is added to the pool. A good procedure is to add enough salt to be near the top of the salt level range for your chlorine generator. Check monthly the stabilizer ( conditioner, Cyanuric Acid) level in your pool and make sure is is between 60 to 80 ppm. Stabilizer helps keep the chlorine in the water by protecting it from UV rays from the sun.

Why does the salt level in ppm for some chlorine generators differ from others?

Different brand chlorine generators have deferent salt level. A higher salt level lets the chlorine generator produce more chlorine and helps extend cell life. Please refer to the owner manual of the brand of chlorine generator you're using.
