A quick guideline on the installation of the Hayward Phantom automatic pool cleaner. For information on the installation of a booster pump [click here] . The Hayward Phantom automatic pool cleaner is a pressure-side pool cleaner that requires a dedicated 3/4 HP booster pump 115/230 volts, a pressure line built to your pool and a 220v electrical source. The Phantom pool cleaner is designed to connect to a 1/2 inch dedicated return line that is at least 6 inches below the normal water level with 1-1/2 female threads. If the dedicated return line has 3/4 inch female threads, you'll need to purchase a 1-1/2 inch NPTF x 3/4 inch NPTM adopter.

Spring Startup cleaning steps:

1 - Clean the pool of any objects that might interfere with the cleaner's operation

2 - Check to see that the water is at the recommended level

3 - Check the water chemistry. The water should be properly balanced (pH level and the pool free from algae. Algae can adversely affect the operation and performance of the cleaner. Check this link for the latest algaecides available from us.

4 - Clean and backwash the filter without the Phantom pool cleaner in the pool

Assembling and Sizing the Rigid Pressure Hose:

1 - The Phantom cleaner comes with 10 rigid hose pipes (Part N) and 5 hose pipe couplings (Part I)

2 - Lubricate the 5 Hose Pipe Couplings by dunking them in soapy water

3 - Align the Barbs on the Hoses Coupling with the Tabs on the Rigid Hose Pipes and snap together. Be sure the black O-ring does not slip out of the groove on the hose Pipe Coupling (If the O-ring is visible through the latch opening when pipes are snapped together the O-ring has slipped out of the groove and will leak

4 - Make 5 sets of Pipe Assemblies by connecting 1 rigid Hose Pipe onto each end of the Hose Pipe Coupling

5 - Locate the "Measuring Tape" (packed in bag #1), secure the end of the tape marked "Wall Connector End" on the pool coping immediately above the Universal Wall Fitting.

6 - Unroll the Measuring Tape, walk around the pool to the farthest point along the pool wall from the Universal Wall Fitting. At the farthest point from the Universal Wall Fitting hold the Measuring Tape and the pool edge/coping and read the number of Pipe Assemblies specified on the tape. Note if the Measuring Tape specifies more than 5 Pipe Assemblies, you'll need to purchase additional Pipe sections (Part # AX6000HE). If the measuring Tape specifies fewer than 5 pipe Assemblies, set the remaining Pipe Assemblies aside you'll not need them.

7 - Lubricate the swivel on the 3 ft. Hose Wall End Assembly (Part T) in soapy water then snap into one of the Pipe Assemblies.

8 - Lubricate the swivel on the Hose Cleaner End Assembly (Part S) in soapy water then snap into a different Pipe Assembly

9 - Open the bag that contains the Hose Swivel Assemblies (Part R located in Bag # 2) and lubricate both ends of the Hose Assemblies with soapy water. Connect the Pipe Assemblies by snapping the Hose Swivel Assemblies into each of the Pipe Assemblies

Hayward Phantom Booster pump installation

The Hayward Phantom and Viper - and many other pressure-side pool cleaners - require a dedicated water supply separate from the rest of a pool's hydraulic system. A booster pump needs to be attached to the plumbing system to produce the necessary highpressure flow for the cleaner without adversely impacting the rest of the system, . Nowadays, most pools are constructed with a dedicated pressure-cleaner line being installed even if a pressure cleaner and booster pump are not purchased or installed when the pool is constructed.

Booster Pump plumbing
A booster pump and pressure-side cleaner can be added at any time after pool construction. The most important step is to properly position the booster inlet connection relative to other system components.
The booster inlet should be placed after the heating source on the pressure side of the plumbing system.
Also, if the following are present, the booster inlet should be located before the chlorinator and after the three-way valve in a pool-spa system.

Begin installation by installing a T-fitting into the current plumbing at the location, which will properly position the pump hydraulically. Cut out a large enough section from the piping to install the T-fitting. Regardless of the pipe's diameter, the bottom of the T needs to be reduced to 3/4" FIP. NOTE: Hayward booster pumps ship with four 3/4" threaded hose connectors, stainless steel hose clamps, and a reinforced flexible hose.
Apply one or two wraps of Teflon tape (not too much!) around the hose connectors, thread a connector into the 3/4" outlet on the T-fitting, then thread the other connector into the booster pump INLET port.
Measure then cut the hose to fit, slide it onto the connectors, and secure it with the hose clamps.

Once the booster pump inlet line is installed, connect the booster pump discharge (top or vertical port) to the dedicated pressure cleaner line. As with the pump inlet line, this connection can be made with the supplied 3/4 " hose, though the dedicated pressure-cleaner line will first need to be reduced to 3/4" FIP because the pressure-side cleaner line must be at least 1 inch in diameter. (Some older dedicated cleaner lines may be only 3/4" which is not large enough to supply proper water flow.)

NOTE: A more time-consuming but smart looking alternative to the flexible hosing is to run 3/4" rigid PVC pipe for the dedicated lines to and /rom the booster pump. The booster pump inlet, discharge, and dedicated cleaner line are shaded blue in this installation.)

The Hayward Phantom booster pump is NOT a self-priming pump. It receives water
from the main circulation pump, increases the velocity and sends it to the cleaner along a dedicated cleaner
plumbing line.
NOTE: A dedicated line to the booster pump and pressure-side cleaner should be situated after the heater (left) and before the chlorinator (if present). Here, we shaded the inlet line to the booster pump dark blue, and shaded the booster's discharge line to the cleaner line in light blue.

Electrical connection: Hayward booster pumps are able to run off of 120V or 240V, ensuring maximum installation options. The pump comes factory-wired for 240V and can be changed for 120V by simply moving the plug on the motor's terminal board. Typically, power for the booster pump is pulled from the load line of the timer or control panel - not because it's more efficient, but as a precaution that will prevent the booster pump from operating if the filter pump is not also operating. When using automated controls, refer to the owners manual for proper hook-up.

Wall fitting - vinyl pools: To connect the cleaner to the dedicated pressure cleaner line, you must install the 1.5" universal wall fitting (included with the cleaner). Contractors often install a dedicated pressure cleaner line whether or not a cleaner is sold with the pool, anticipating the need for it later on. They may even install a return fitting faceplate over the cleaner line and leave the liner uncut, but this is not a universal practice.

Wall fitting - vinyl pool To connect the cleaner to the dedicated pressure cleaner line, you must install the 1.5" universal wall fitting (included with the cleaner). Contractors often install a dedicated pressure cleaner line whether or not a cleaner is sold with the pool, anticipating the need for it later on. They may even install a return fitting faceplate over the cleaner line and leave the liner uncut, but this is not a universal practice. Therefore, if there is no faceplate covering the cleaner line, you will need to search for the cleaner line behind the liner. The line is normally located near the center of the longest wall and you'll be able to feel the fitting which is covered by the liner. Once it is located, install the faceplate. Once the faceplate is located or installed, CAREFULLY remove the liner material inside the return fitting.

Wall fitting - Gunite pool With Gunite or fiberglass pools, unfinished wall fittings may be capped with a threaded plug. Simply remove the plug and install the universal wall fitting.

No dedicated cleaner line Installation of a dedicated cleaner line and booster pump is possible with a little extra work. Running a new cleaner line can be done several different ways and varies regionally. Your local Hayward Technical representative can provide insight about the local and regional trends and practices in your area.
