Selecting a Hayward Pool Pump

Note: The information provided here is intended as a guide in helping customers determine which size pump will be suitable for an existing swimming pool. The steps outlined below will allow you to roughly gauge which Hayward pump is most suitable for your pool. For additional information on Hayward pool pumps contact: www.haywardnet.com

Determine the surface area of your swimming pool or spa

Step1 Select which one of the above pool shapes closesly resemble your pool and calculate gallons of water in your pool using one of the formulas below:

Step 2 Gallons of water in pool:
Rectangular Pool:
  L x W x 7.5
Kidney-shaped Pool:
  (A+B) x L x 0.45 x 6.9
Circular Pool:
  R x R x 3.14 x 5.5
  L= length; W= Width; A&B= Width; R=Radius

Step 3 Calculate the Flow Rate (GPM):
All shape type pools
  Gallons x 480 (@ 8 hours turnover rate)

Step 4

Determine your pool systems smallest pipe sizes for suction and discharge and make sure the GPM you calculated above does not exceed the Max GPM rating for your pipe as indicated in the table to the right.

Maximum GPM
Pipe Size Max GPM
2" 85
2.5" 120
3" 180
4" 305

Step 5

With a clean filter, record the filter pressure (psi), then multiply it times 2.31 to obtain Feet of Discharge Head (PS) Pressure-side Head Loss= psi x 2.31

Use the table to the right to estimate Suction-side Head Loss (SS):____

Total Head Loss = PS + SS

Suction-side Head Loss (SS)
Pump HP Feet of water
3/4 hp 4.5 - 5.5 ft.
1 hp 7 - 9 ft.
1.5 hp 10.0 - 12.5 ft.
2 hp 13.5 - 16.0 ft.
3 hp 14.0 - 17.0 ft.

Step 6 Using the Hayward Pool Pumps performance curve provided below, determine which pump's performance curve comes closest to matching the point where the system's GPM (step 4) intersects the Total Head Loss (step 5).

Hayward TriStar Pump Dimension and Specification

Hayward TriStar Pump Removing just two screws releases the motor cover - providing plenty of room to connect wires during installation smooth, no-rib basket that's a snap to clean. TriStar maintains a compact footprint and seamlessly retrofits a wide variety of existing filtration systems. TriStar's wet end to the drive train much more reliably than plastic bushings, plastic clamps, or molded plastic fasteners found on other pumps. TriStar is the first pump to feature a Tri-Lock cam-and-ramp strainer cover (left) that closes with less than a quarter-turn.
