Once you've removed the diffuser proceed the remove the impeller
by first removing the impeller screw by turning it CLOCKWISE (impeller
screw is reverse threaded). Sometimes the impeller screw can be
corroded or can have heavy calcium build up which makes it hard
to remove. Use WD40 or other rust removal aids to loosen the impeller
screw. You may also need to hold the motor shaft with a vice grip
or crescent wrench to prevent the shaft from spinning the impeller.
Keep impeller screw safe and next proceed to remove the impeller
(unscrew impeller from motor shaft). This step may be difficult
depending how old the pump is. You'll need to hold the pump motor
shaft with a crescent wrench while turning the impeller COUNTERCLOCKWISE.
You'll also need to get a piece of cloth to help you grab the impeller
with your hand securely. Be careful not to use metal tools to grab
the impeller it is made of hard plastic part that may brake or crack.

Check Valves: When two or more pounds of water pressure
is applied the spring-loaded gate opens. The valve relys
on a small internal spring to close the disc whenever water
is not moving in the intended direction.
